Development of chitosan-glucose and chitosan-citric complexes edible coating to improve tomatoes post-harvest quality CIGR Journal
A., El-Beltagy; Eissa, Ayman H. Amer; S., El-Sayed.
The effect of different shrimp chitosan molecular weights as well as shrimp chitosan complexes (chitosan-glucose and chitosan-citric) on the quality characteristics of the stored (at 7°C±2°C and 90% RH) tomato fruits (Lycopersicum esculentum) was investigated. Coating tomatoes with high molecular weight chitosan (H.M.C.G) significantly improved firmness and weight loss. The lowest weight loss was found in high molecular weight chitosan-glucose (H.M.C.G) treatment followed by the fruits coated with high molecular weight chitosan (HMC) and then uncoated tomato fruits. Both molecular weights was clear on retarding the total acidity loss especially for stored tomato fruit coated with low molecular weight chitosan, while control tomatoes exhibited a larger...

A., Jefferson Yunis; Delgado, Daniel Cala; Claudiano, Gustavo S.; Marcusso, Paulo F.; Oliveira, Marcos A.; Moraes, Flávio R.; Fernandes, João B. K..

Restricted use of antibiotics in organic pig farming Organic Eprints
Aabo, Søren; Jensen, Annette Nygaard.
Can the restricted use of antibiotics in organic pig farming be documented to provide a safer, high quality meat product with less antibiotic resistant bacteria? The project SafeOrganic aims to document that the restricted use of antimicrobials in organic pig production leads to lower levels of antibiotic resistant bacteria compared with the level in conventional pigs. However, the project will also address the risk of losing this quality parameter, due to a widespread practice of slaughtering organic pigs together with conventional pigs, implying a risk of cross-contamination.

Contamination chimique du milieu marin : de la mesure à l'évaluation des risques ArchiMer
Abarnou, Alain.
This activity report entitled (“Chemical contamination of the marine environment: from measurement to risk assessment”) summarizes the main stages my career at Ifremer from November 1975 to june 2013. The first chapter deals with the seawater chlorination and chlorinated waters released into the sea, the identification and the conditions of the formation of various by-product of these processes. The second chapter concerns PCBs, their nature, their chemical analysis in environmental matrices. PCBs are considered as the best examples of persistant and bioaccumulable compounds and therefore, in all this report they are flagship contaminants to which other groups of studied substances are compared. The third chapter refers to studies performed within marine...

2-Phenitidine derivatives as suitable inhibitors of butyrylcholinesterase BJPS
Abbasi,Muhammad Athar; Aziz-ur-Rehman,; Qureshi,Muhammad Zahid; Khan,Farhan Mehmood; Khan,Khalid Mohmmed; Ashraf,Muhammad; Afzal,Iftikhar.
This manuscript reports the synthesis of a series of N-substituted derivatives of 2-phenitidine. First, the reaction of 2-phenitidine (1) with benzene sulfonyl chloride (2) yielded N-(2-ethoxyphenyl) benzenesulfonamide (3), which further on treatment with sodium hydride and alkyl halides (4a-g) furnished into new sulfonamides (5a-g). Second, the phenitidine reacted with benzoyl chloride (6) and acetyl chloride (8) to yield the reported N-benzoyl phenitidine (7) and N-acetyl phenitidine (9), respectively. These derivatives were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, ¹H-NMR, and EI-MS, and then screened against acetylcholinesterase, butylcholinesterase, and lipoxygenase enzyme, and were found to be potent inhibitors of butyrylcholinesterase alone.

A new species of Nassarius (Gastropoda, Nassariidae) from Canopus Bank, off Northeast Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Abbate,Daniel; Cavallari,Daniel Caracanhas.
Nassarius levis sp. nov. is described from Canopus Bank, off Ceará, Northeast Brazil, based on shell morphology. It differs from other Brazilian species of the genus in having a more elongate shell, with a weakly developed parietal shield and a notably smooth surface. This last trait has not yet been described among the Western Atlantic Nassarius, but it is common to other congeners from the Eastern Atlantic, such as Nassarius elatus (Gould, 1845) and the Indo-Pacific, such as Nassarius excellens (Kuroda & Habe, 1961).

Cryptotephrochronology of the Eemian and the last interglacial-glacial transition in the North East Atlantic ArchiMer
Abbott, Peter M.; Austin, William E. N.; Davies, Siwan M.; Pearce, Nicholas J. G.; Hibbert, Fiona D..
The Eemian interglacial and the onset of the subsequent glacial period serve as the most recent analogue for the natural operation of the climate system during the current interglacial. Pronounced climatic oscillations occurred during this period, but their nature and pattern are poorly understood due to dating limitations and unknown phase relationships between different regions and archives. Tephrochronology offers considerable potential for precise correlation of disparate palaeoclimatic archives preserving evidence of these rapid climatic transitions through the tracing of common isochronous tephra horizons. We outline the identification of three previously unknown cryptotephra horizons within a marine core from the Rockall Trough, North East Atlantic....

Successful use of gentamycin as an antibiotic prophylaxis regimen to reduce the rate of healthcare-associated infections after renal transplantation BJID
Abboud,Cely S.; Bergamasco,Maria Daniela; Sousa,Ercilia Evangelista de; Zandonadi,Eliana de Cássia; Cortez,Doralice.
At our institution, we observed an increase in the incidence of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) due to Gram-negative bacilli, including three cases of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, among patients who underwent renal transplantation. In addition to strengthening infection control measures, we chose to add gentamycin to the antibiotic prophylaxis regimen of patients undergoing renal transplantation. We assessed the number of HAI occurring within 30 days of renal transplantation during two time periods: (1) the preintervention period, between September 2009 and June 2010, and (2) the post-intervention period, between July 2010 and April 2011. The intervention consisted of the addition of gentamycin to the surgical antibiotic prophylaxis...

Taxonomic relationships in some Vicia species from Egypt, based on seed morphology and SDS-PAGE of seed proteins - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.19345 Biological Sciences
Abdel Khalik, Kadry Nabeh; Sohag University, Faculty of Science; Al Gohary, Iman Hussien.
The seed morphology and seed proteins of 11 Vicia taxa from Egypt were studied. Macro- and micro-morphological characters, including seed shape, color, size, hilum shape and seed sculpture were described and analyzed. The secondary sculpture of the cell wall varies from papillose in nearly all Vicia species to lophate in V. hirsuta. Further, the seed proteins of studied taxa were investigated by SDS-PAGE and 39 different bands were scored. The similarity analysis based on the SDS-PAGE profile and seed morphology was found to be a useful characteristic for the discrimination of Vicia species both on the subgeneric and the sectional levels. The present study did not acknowledge V. tetrasperma and V. hirsuta as subgenus Ervum. As a result, division of Vicia...

Genetic similarity among Tunisian cultivated olive estimated through SSR markers Scientia Agricola
Abdelhamid,Sofiane; Grati-kamoun,Naziha; Marra,Francesco; Caruso,Tiziano.
Olive (Olea europaea L. subsp. europaea var. europaea) is one of the oldest fruit tree in the Mediterranean basin, and is cultivated for oil and canned fruit. Part of this interest is driven by the economic importance of olive oil which is increasing throughout the world due to its beneficial effect to human health. In Tunisia, olive has great socio-economic importance, with more than 60 millions olive trees cultivated for olive oil production including a wide range of cultivars which are widely extended from the north to the south regions of the country for its high economic value. Here, we applied microsatellites (SSRs) molecular markers to assess the genetic variability of the most important Tunisian olive cultivars. In total, the 10 simple sequence...

Conus vexillum venom induces oxidative stress in Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma cells: an insight into the mechanism of induction J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Abdel-Rahman,Mohamed A; Abdel-Nabi,Ismail M; El-Naggar,Mohamed S; Abbas,Osama A; Strong,Peter N.
Background It is estimated that venoms of marine cone snails (genus Conus) contain more than 100,000 different small peptides with a wide range of pharmacological and biological actions. Some of these peptides were developed into potential therapeutic agents and as molecular tools to understand biological functions of nervous and cardiovascular systems. In this study we examined the cytotoxic and anticancer properties of the marine vermivorous cone snail Conus vexillum (collected from Hurgada and Sharm El-Shaikh, Red Sea, Egypt) and suggest the possible mechanisms involved. The in vitro cytotoxic effects of Conus venom were assessed against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells. Results Conus venom treatment resulted in concentration-dependent...

Lemierre syndrome from a neck abscess due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus BJID
Abhishek,Agarwal; Sandeep,Singla; Tarun,Pandey.
Lemierre syndrome is characterized by acute septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV) that develops after an oropharyngeal infection, and can be complicated by septic emboli to lungs and other organs. The most frequent causative agent is Fusobacterium necrophorum, an anaerobic bacillus found in normal oropharyngeal flora. Staphylococcus aureus has emerged as a cause of Lemierre syndrome in the last decade. We report a case of a 24-year-old man who developed septic IJV thrombosis and necrotizing pneumonia due to S. aureus from an infected hematoma in the right sternocleidomastoid muscle. Antibiotics are the mainstay of therapy with few cases needing anticoagulation. A good outcome is dependent upon an awareness of the condition, a high...
